UNITY Public Art Launches in Alexandria, VA

ALEXANDRIA, VA –Feeling compelled to demonstrate we are more united than divided despite current political conversations, Nancy Belmont, creator of the Courage Wall, launches a new interactive public art project at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2016.

UNITY is circular arrangement of 32 poles in a large field. Each pole is labeled with an identifier. For example, “I’m a parent,” “I speak English as a Second Language,” “I identify as LGBTQ.” With yarn, participants tie to each pole with which they identify. A canopy of interconnectedness forms as more people participate. In the end, we see that we are all connected by something. This project celebrates the uniqueness of individuals and raises awareness of how labels impact our perception of and interactions with the world.

Volunteer Alexandria’s Executive Director, Marion Brunken, invited local non-profits whose constituents identify with the UNITY pole labels to participate in the kick-off. “UNITY is a great way for people to experience that they’re not alone. It also provides an opportunity to learn about our community and its members. If it leads to people wanting to volunteer to help others, that would be a great outcome.”

Nancy Belmont, the project’s creator says, “UNITY challenges the idea that just because we are different, we are separate. With today’s political rhetoric, it’s important to remind ourselves that our differences are to be celebrated. Through this three-dimensional art project, we can see that we are unique individuals connected by a common thread.”

On Thursday, June 9th, the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce encourages organizations to participate in a free facilitated exploration of UNITY. This outing is a great way for business leaders to build community within their teams. Organizations can register for a slot on the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce website in the events section.

Nancy is the CEO and Chief Inspiration Officer at Vessence Corporation. In May 2015 she launched the Courage Wall as a way to raise awareness of the fears that hold us back from living big, bold authentic lives. The Courage Wall and UNITY are both projects that fall under her #WeLiveBig initiative to promote human flourishing.
